Classified as a Western Slavic language, Slovak is spoken by around 5 million people, who are mainly based in Slovakia.
To a lesser extent, Slovak is also used in Hungary, Montenegro and Serbia. Slovak can be understood by Czech speakers and vice versa, with neither language going through any major changes since the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in the early 1990s. Only time will tell whether there will be more changes to the Slovak language in the future, in order to differentiate itself from the Czech language. Slovak has a wide range of different dialects, which are usually divided into four different groups, by their geographical usage.
