Hindi, one of the official languages of India, is spoken as a first language by an impressive 425 million people worldwide.
With an estimated additional 120 million people speaking Hindi as a second language, the importance of Hindi for international businesses should not be underestimated. Also spoken in a range of other countries outside of India, including Fiji, Suriname and Nepal, Hindi is one of the most spoken languages worldwide. Hindi originally got its name from the word ‘Hind’, a Persian word meaning ‘land of the Indus River’, from the 11th century Turkish invaders of the Punjab and Gangetic Plains. Just like many European languages, Hindi is written from left to right but unlike English, it doesn’t use articles (like ‘a’ or ‘the’).
